Tash Aw
Stranger on the Pier. Portrait of a Family
The discussion will be held in English.
Tash Aw tells a deeply personal story of modern Asia as seen through the eyes of his Malaysian-Chinese family. To escape poverty, his grandfathers fled from China to Malaysia. But when Aw wanted to know more about his ancestors, he encountered a wall of silence: Chinese culture looks to the future; it does not talk about the past. Aw interweaves his family's stories with his own experiences, revealing a dizzying diversity of languages, dialects and identities. It is a memoir that resists the Western gaze and explores issues such as migration and transgenerational trauma from a non-European perspective.
