Peter strolls through the village, sits in the Café Du Nord, takes the train cross country. Occasionally he works in the village shop or helps out at the Café to pay for necessities. ​

The villagers let him know that things can’t carry on like this. Something needs to change, quelque chose! Peter needs to make something of himself. And he needs a woman: one with the smile, that smiles at him and the look that looks at him. So, he goes in search and wants to “see how others do it, but what on earth are they doing?”
