RENÉ AGUIGAH
James Baldwin. The witness. A portrait
Reading and discussion will be in German.
James Baldwin (1924 - 1987) is one of the 20th century’s most important writers. During his lifetime, he became famous for the books "Giovanni's Room" and "The Fire Next Time".
Aguigah follows Baldwin's life from his origins in the poverty-stricken slums of Harlem and his escape, from the racism he was forced to endure on a daily basis, to Paris, his rapid rise to become a sought-after speaker and his relationships with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Above all, however, he explores the relationship between Baldwin's artistry and his activism, the tension between literature and politics, his advocacy of minority rights and his universalist convictions.
