A man builds gear boxes. He is arrested and sent to a prison camp because he belongs to the wrong ethnic group and was living in the wrong place. In his novel, Felix Uhlmann describes a no-man’s land of hatred and violence, vulnerability, but also love. With merciless consistency the nameless man carries on. He asks no questions, carries out orders with all their consequences. He doesn’t know anything else. Yet he senses there is more to life than he known has so far.
