Literary Walk
Russian Travellers in Basel
Basel was a popular stopover for Russian travellers, with a visit to the Art Museum an essential part of the programme: ‘The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb’ made its way into Dostoevsky’s novel ‘The Idiot’. Lenin gave an incendiary political speech in Basel. Andrej Belyj mixed with the numerous Russian emigres in Dornach and helped with the construction of Rudolf Steiner’s first Goetheanum. Dostoevsky’s wife, on the other hand, complained the place was as still as a grave after a breakout of cholera.
